Surry Hills Times Exclusive
It’s the scandal that rocked the entire suburb. Industrial grade marijuana grown in plain sight in the windows of Surry Hills’ Library next to Tolstoy, Hemingway and Roger Hargraves. What most of us thought was delightfully aesthetic bamboo turned out to be world-class marijuana that grew over two storeys high.
We walked past and marvelled at the clever urban green design. Who knew this hothouse of learning and culture was a greenhouse for mind bending drugs?
In a bust that was months in the making, several drug enforcement agency officers had been posing as clients of the library, pretending to write screenplays whilst secretly monitoring fellow readers.
The stakeout took place over months. Many undercover police were monitoring the library posing as unassuming amateur photographers.
Buds were hidden in books with a cavity carved in the middle.
The oddly unambiguous code word was “Potter”.
To make matters worse, several narcotics anonymous groups took place on the second level, even worse so did childcare groups. The hallucinogens were well within reach the entire time.
“I’ve never seen a more placid group of children” said childcare worker Libby. “It also explains why they insisted on listening to Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ album. I thought that was strange for a bunch of two-year-olds.”
Many people would gather immediately outside the library in the adjacent grassed quadrangle, sitting on their laptops, conveniently using the library’s wi-fi as an excuse for loitering if ever questioned.
However undercover police would keep a close eye on those entering and leaving the library in a six month operation that involved dozens of officers.
