The government has responded to the issue of housing affordability by subsidising the cost of Smashed Av at local cafes by planting an avocado tree in the Surry Hills Community Garden.
This is the first of an initiative by the government that will see avocado trees planted throughout Sydney’s East and Inner West.
Research conducted by property mogul Tim Gurner confirmed that the affordability of housing for first home buyers was due to the prohibitive cost of avocado on toast.
“It sucks” says Caitlin, Fine Arts student at the University of Sydney.
Local housing minister Grahame Wynne was on hand at the planting of the first avocado tree.
“We feel confident that this exciting initiative will go a long way to addressing the housing affordability crisis in Sydney,” said Wynne.
On average avocado trees take 5 years to mature, until then it’ll be Vegemite on toast for Caitlin and her friends. ‘”It’s grim” said Caitlin. “But I’m stoked I’ll be able to one day have avocado on toast, and afford a house”.
This comes off the back of a report into the cost of avocados.
The report commissioned by the State Government Housing Department found that avocados were unreasonably priced showing links to Russian Mafia syndicates.
