It has been revealed the AFL has been secretly trialling a hybrid game that combines horse racing at Royal Randwick.
This comes as news broke yesterday that construction of an Australian rules field the size of the MCG in the middle of the famous racecourse was confirmed.
To many this is in line with AFL’s aggressive expansion into everywhere and everything.
This year they took a punt at the ill-fated AFLX, essentially AFL played on a rectangular Rugby League field.
The AFL remains buoyant that the trial match on the weekend was a glowing success.
And there were certainly some magnificent highlights such as Hugh Bowman taking a mark on board Winx.
However, one sour note was when Michelle Payne riding on the back of Buddy Franklin was accused of using the whip too forcibly on the lacklustre full forward.
And at one stage veteran Jarrad McVeigh was suspected of breaking his leg, and was very nearly shot by race officials before AFL trainers intervened.
Additionally this latest venture for the AFL does pose some logistical problems.
Zak Jones celebrated a goal with Will Hayward before being bowled over by several horses thundering down the track.
Regardless the AFL hierarchy remains resolute and positive.
“There is not a sports ground in Sydney we will not conquer. AFL will find a way. Death to Rugby League!” said an upbeat, if not militantly tyrannical, Gillon McLachlan the Supreme Leader of the AFL.
